Chile

For US customs, the country of origin is generally where a product was manufactured, produced, or grown—not the country it was shipped from or the location of the seller. A shipment sent to the United States from Chile may contain goods made in Chile, another country, or multiple countries. The origin shown in a tariff-measures tool helps determine which country-specific measures may apply to the goods.

Origin can be straightforward for goods made entirely in one country, but it can be complex when production involves multiple countries. Customs may apply a “substantial transformation” analysis: whether processing creates a new product with a different name, character, or use. Rules can vary by product and measure, so do not assume that assembly, packaging, labeling, or shipment through Chile changes origin. Preferential trade-program origin rules may also differ from ordinary marking or tariff-measure rules.

What to check

• Identify where each product was actually manufactured, produced, or grown, and do not use the ship-from country as a substitute.
• For goods made in multiple countries, review the applicable product-specific origin rule and assess whether the processing in Chile or another country was substantial transformation.
• Collect and retain supplier origin declarations, manufacturing records, bills of materials, and supporting production documents.
• Check whether the measure uses ordinary customs origin, a preferential trade-agreement rule, or another defined origin standard before relying on the result.
• Verify the tariff classification and origin together; if the facts are complex or the exposure is material, obtain guidance from a qualified customs broker or trade attorney.
